What is “Chronic”

  • (of a person) having an illness persisting for a long time or constantly recurring
  • (of a problem) long-lasting and difficult to eradicate

When we think of chronic conditions we often think of heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, asthma and other life-threatening conditions, but if we consider the definition of chronic we need to broaden that definition and have a look at health concerns we have that are affecting our overall quality of life and our abilities to remain happy, healthy and active.

Let’s talk about other chronic conditions that impact your life and your ability to live well. Have any of the following caused you to a) miss or under perform at work b) cancel social engagements c) skip workouts and activities d) negatively affected your relationships more than a few times a year? If so, your condition may be chronic.

  • Depression/Anxiety
  • Digestive issues/IBS
  • Frequent Colds/Flu’s
  • Migraines/Headaches
  • Back/Muscle spasm’s/Pain
  • Insomnia/Stress
  • Debilitating fatigue
  • Menstrual difficulties
  • Chasing phantom symptoms with no real diagnosis

Diet and exercise (outside of seeing your medical doctor, naturopath, chiropractor or wellness practitioner of course) are great tools to self-manage your re-occurring conditions and improve your quality of life. But what does that really mean? What can you do? Where do I start? How much change do I need to implement to see improvements? Strength training? Cardio????
